Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav (October - December 2016)

ICAR- CPCRI, Kasaragod implemented the MGMG initiative in collaboration with other stakeholders’ viz., Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Department of Agriculture, Input dealers, progressive farmers etc. Thirty six scientists were grouped into eight teams and selected 38 villages in Kasaragod district of Kerala as given below. During October - December 2016, meetings, interface programmes, trainings, demonstration on improved practices, farm advisory visits, mobile advisory services were organized in the selected villages for the benefit of farming community.

Salient accomplishments

                During the quarter, major emphasis was given for nutrient management, pest and diseases management and value addition in coconut, arecanut, cocoa and other major crops grown in the region. Frequent farm advisory visits, mobile based advisories, group discussion were conducted for the benefit of farmers in selected villages. Major events organized during the quarter include, scientist-extension-farmer interface, interactive seminars, field visits, exhibition on new technologies. Kisan Mela and centenary expo 2016 were organized during 10- 13 December, 2016 in which large number of farmers and other stakeholders participated from MGMG villages.  Publications on coconut, arecanut and cocoa and farm calendar were distributed to the farmers and other stakeholders.

Frequent farm advisory visits, mobile based advisories, group discussion were conducted for the benefit of farmers in selected villages. Farmers from selected villages participated in Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bheema Yojana meeting organized by KVK, Kasaragod at ICAR-CPCRI, Kasaragod. Major events organized during the quarter include, scientist-extension-farmer interface, interactive seminars, field visits, exhibition on new technologies. Publications on coconut, arecanut and cocoa were distributed to the farmers and other stakeholders. Important programmes which were organized in different villages during the quarter are given below.

•  Awareness on prophylactic measures for managing pests and diseases at Badiadka on 21^st June, 2016.
•  Interface programme on pest and disease management in palms and cocoa on 30^th June, 2016 at Badiadka, Kasaragod.
•  Hands on training on Trichoderma production at Ayampara on 9^th June, 2016.
•  Interface programme on Diseases management at Kulathur on 6^th June, 2016.
•  Farm advisory visits for disease management on 16^th May, 2016 at Mogral Puthur.
•  Sensitizing farmers on “Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana”

Hands- on - training on ‘Trichoderma Mass Production’

Hands- on - training on ‘Trichoderma Mass Production’ for the members of Women Self Help Group was conducted at Udayapuram on 09.06.2016 as part of the Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav Initiative.  Training programme was conducted in collaboration with Krishi Bhavan, Kodom Belur.Dr. C. Thamban, Head, Division of Social Sciences, Dr. V. H. Prathibha, Scientist from CPCRI, Kasaragod and Mr. P. Vishnu, Agricultural Officer, Kodom Belur handled sessions on different aspects in the training programme .

Workshop on ‘Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav’ – ‘My Village My Pride’

A Workshop on ‘Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav’ – ‘My Village My Pride’ was organized at ICAR-Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Kasaragod. The  innovative initiative “Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav” by Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Govt. of Indiahas been planned to promote the direct interface of agricultural scientists with the farmers to hasten the lab to land process.  The objective of this scheme is to provide farmers with required information, knowledge and advisories on regular basis by adopting villages.

Apart from CPCRI head quarters at Kasaragod scientists working at the regional stations and research centres of CPCRI at Kayangulam in Kerala, Kidu and Vittal in Karnataka, Kahikuchi in Assam and Mohitnagar in West Bengal will also be adopting villages in their respective localities under the initiative. The initiative will be implemented with support and collaboration of local self governments, Department of Agriculture, ATMA, Non Governmental Organisations and other agencies involved in implementing grass root level agricultural development and extension activities.

Dr. P. Chowdappa, Director, ICAR-CPCRI presided over the workshop.Dr. M. Govindan, Dean, College of Agriculture, Kerala Agricultural University, Padannakkad and  Mr. P. Pradeep, Principal Agricultural Officer, Kasaragod participated in the workshop and offered felicitations.

Discussion on selection of villages, interface with stakeholders, baseline survey, linkage with other agencies, demonstration of technologies etc. was held in the workshop.

Farmers’ Meet and Field Demonstration conducted under ‘Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav’ – ‘My Village My Pride’

A Farmers’ Meet (Kisan Gosti) and Field Demonstration were conducted as part of the ‘Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav’ – ‘My Village My Pride’ initiative of ICAR – Central Plantation Crops Research Institute. The programme was conducted at Kolikunnu village in Madikkai gramapanchayat in Kasaragod district on 28.09.2015. The topic of the Farmers’ meet was ‘Technologies for Soil Health Management for Sustainable Agricultural Development’. Dr. P.Chowdappa, Director, ICAR-CPCRI inaugurated the Farmers’ meet and field demonstration. Field demonstration was conducted on methods of collecting soil samples.  CPCRI would be distributing soil health cards to selected farmers in the panchayat as part of the national initiative. Dr. C.Thamban, Dr.A.C.Mathew and Dr Surekha, scientists from CPCRI, Kasaragod handled different sessions in the farmers’ meet. The programme was organised in collaboration with Madikkai Coconut Farmers Federation. Dr. C. Thamban, Principal Scientist, welcomed the gathering and Mr. Rajan Kuttyanam, president of Madikkai Coconut Farmers Federation, proposed vote of thanks.

Mera Gaon – Mera Gaurav” (My Village- My Pride) at Meenja Panchayath of Kasaragod District

Under the “Mera Gaon – Mera Gaurav” (‘My Village- My Pride’) initiative, ICAR-CPCRI Scientists and coconut growers together inaugurated a Coconut Federation ‘Greenvalley’ at Meenja village of Kasaragod district, Kerala State. Under this Federation, 12 Coconut Producers’ Societies (CPS) have been registered, each with a minimum of 40 coconut growers. The main objective of the Federation is to collectively cultivate, harvest, develop value-added products and market the produce for better price. In his inaugural address, Dr. P. Chowdappa, Director, ICAR-CPCRI, highlighted the huge opportunity available with coconut producers for marketing their products both domestically and internationally which needs to be exploited by the way of value addition. The benefits would be better realized through the formation of a Federation by which way both small and marginal farmers would be immensely benefitted.

Dr. K.B. Hebbar, Head (PB & PHT), ICAR-CPCRI, gave a detailed account of ‘Kalparasa’, its  collection, marketing as a natural health drink and processing into sugar, jaggery, honey or syrup. This was followed by field demonstration of ‘Kalparasa’ tapping in farmer’s coconut garden by Dr. K.B. Hebbar, Dr. Alka Gupta and Dr. M.K. Rajesh. By adopting this technology, coconut farmers can increase their income by at least ten-folds. It will not only improve the income of coconut farmers, but also generate employment in terms of ‘Kalparasa’ technicians, assistants and marketing personnel.

Presiding over the function, the Federation President Dr. D.C. Chowta, a progressive farmer of the area, stressed on the need to adopt latest scientific technologies developed by research institutes/ agencies for maximizing the profitability and called for active cooperation and participation of each member of the Federation to realize the objectives of the Federation.Presiding over the function, the Federation President Dr. D.C. Dr. C. Thamban, Principal Scientist and Nodal officer of ‘Mera Gaon – Mera Gaurav’ programme conducted a ‘Kisan Goshthi’ on ‘Coconut Cultivation Practices and Value Addition’. Around 150 farmers, Agricultural Officer of the Panchayath, CPS Presidents and members of Meenja Panchayath actively participated in the deliberations and the demonstrations. The querries/issues raised by participants were effectively addressed during the session. Dr. Jaya Prakash Bhat handled the proceedings of the programme. 

Mera Gaon – Mera Gaurav” (My Village- My Pride) at Bedadka Panchayath of Kasaragod District in formulating perspective plan for agricultural development

Under the “Mera Gaon – Mera Gaurav” (‘My Village- My Pride’) initiative, ICAR-CPCRI Scientists in collaboration with the Bedadka panchayath governing body conducted farmers' meet at Kundamkuzhy on 17.01.2016. The main objective was to formulate a perspective plan for the gramapanchayath. Sh. C. Ramachandran, President, Bedadka Gramapanchayath, in his introductory remarks, highlighted the importance of utilising scientific guidance in decentralised governance, especially in the planning phase of agricultural development schemes. Dr. Anitha Karun, Head, Crop Improvement assured the technical support of ICAR- CPCRI in various phases of implementation of the developmental activities. 

Dr. C. Thamban, Head, Social sciences initiated the discussion and suggested that soil fertility, water availability, crop suitability and techno-economic viability should be given adequate emphasis in perspective plan. He also stressed upon developing a comprehensive database through a household level survey and resource mapping. Subsequently, in the open discussion, around 50 selected farmers, extension personnel from Krishibhavan, the grass root level office of State Department of Agriculture, office bearers of farmer organisations including paddy, coconut and vegetable sectors, representatives of Women Self Help Groups farmers and people’s representatives of Bedadka grama panchayath actively participated and their apprehensions, problems and suggestions were raised. The querries/issues raised by participants were effectively addressed during the session. At the end of the discussion, Dr. S. Jayasekhar and Dr. K P Chandran also shared their views and suggestions. Summing up the discussions, Sh. C. Ramachandran, President, Bedadka Gramapanchayath informed that the suggestions of the meeting would be effectively utilised for the preparation of action plan for the year 2016-17 and also for the long term planning process for enhancing efficiency of the farm sector of the panchayath. He also sought the continued support from ICAR-CPCRI for planning and implementing meaningful interventions in farm sector of the panchayath with the active participation of farmers and other stakeholders.

Thirty two scientists were grouped into eight teams and selected 36 villages in Kasaragod district of Kerala as given below. MGMG initiative started on 1^st October 2015 in all the selected villages. During January-March 2016, training programmes, demonstration on improved practices, farm advisory visits, mobile advisory services were organized in the selected villages for the benefit of farming community.

 Salient activities

                During the quarter, major emphasis was given for water management, mulching, pest and diseases management and value addition in coconut, arecanut, cocoa and other major crops grown in the region. Frequent farm advisory visits, mobile based advisories, group discussion were conducted for the benefit of farmers in selected villages. Farmers from selected villages participated in Krishi Mela cum launching programme of centenary celebrations of CPCRI Kasaragod on 12.3.16. Major events organized include, scientist-extension-farmer interface, interactive seminar on advances in cocoa production technologies, field visits, exhibition on new technologies and farm innovations by research institutes, KVKs, private entrepreneurs and innovative farmers. Large number of stakeholders’ covering farmers, scientists, developmental officers and input dealers participated in the Krishi Mela. Publications on coconut, arecanut and cocoa were distributed to the farmers during Krishi Mela. Twenty eight exhibition stalls had showcased their technologies/inputs.
