Training and Exposure Visit on ‘Coconut Cultivation’ held at ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station, Kayamkulam

A comprehensive training programme and exposure visit on “Coconut Cultivation” was organized at the ICAR- CPCRI, Regional Station, Kayamkulam, under the ATMA scheme of Vakathanam Krishi Bhavan, Madappally Block, Kottayam District, on 10 August 2026. A delegation comprising 22 farmers and ATMA agricultural officials participated in the day-long programme.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Regi Jacob Thomas, Head of the Regional Station, who briefed the participants on the origin and mandate of ICAR-CPCRI and highlighted the major technological achievements and contributions of the institute towards the development of plantation crops, particularly coconut. Dr. M. Shareefa, Principal Scientist (Horticulture), delivered a detailed technical session on suitable coconut varieties and hybrids for areas affected by root (wilt) disease. The session also covered important aspects of hybridization techniques and scientific nursery management, with emphasis on the production of healthy and quality coconut planting material.

Dr. A. Abdul Haris, Principal Scientist (Agronomy), and Dr. S. Indhuja, Senior Scientist (Agricultural Microbiology), conducted sessions on advanced production technologies in coconut and efficient cropping systems. The participants were introduced to improved agronomic practices and sustainable approaches for enhancing productivity and resource-use efficiency in coconut-based farming systems.

Dr. Merin Babu, Senior Scientist (Plant Pathology), conducted a session on the early identification and management of root (wilt) disease, leaf rot disease, and other important pest and disease problems affecting coconut. Emphasis was given to eco-friendly biological control measures and integrated pest and disease management strategies suitable for field-level adoption.

The technical sessions were followed by an exposure visit to the coconut nursery and various experimental plots of the Regional Station. The field visit provided the participants with practical exposure to coconut production technologies, nursery practices, disease management approaches, and ongoing research activities. The visit was guided by Dr. Maya Lekshmi and Ms. Asha K. Chandran, Technical Officers, who interacted with the farmers and explained the technologies and experimental interventions being undertaken at the station.
