The World Environment Day was celebrated at ICAR-CPCRI Regional Station, Kayamkulam on 5th June 2026. The celebration was organized in line with UNEP’s World Environment Day theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future”.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. A. Joseph Rajkumar Principal Scientist (Agrl. Entomology), followed by the presidential address delivered by Dr. Regi Jacob Thomas, Head, ICAR-CPCRI, RS, Kayamkulam. In the presidential address, the importance of environmental conservation and collective responsibility in protecting natural resources was emphasized. The Environment Day speech was delivered by Dr. A. Abdul Haris, Principal Scientist (Agronomy), who elaborated on the origin and significance of World Environment Day. The speech also highlighted various climate-related concepts such as carbon credits, carbon sequestration, and the role of trees and ecosystems in carbon storage and climate regulation. In addition, different environmental and climate-related protocols and initiatives introduced by the United Nations for environmental protection and climate change mitigation were also explained.
The keynote address was delivered by the Dr. P. Muralidharan ,Head, ICAR-KVK, Alappuzha who stressed the importance of adopting environmentally sustainable practices and climate-resilient approaches in environmental conservation. He further emphasized how individuals can practically contribute towards reducing carbon emissions and protecting the environment through simple day-to-day actions such as planting and protecting trees, reducing plastic use, conserving water and electricity, adopting eco-friendly transportation methods, minimizing waste generation, practicing waste segregation and recycling, and supporting sustainable lifestyles.
As part of the celebrations, a tree planting activity was organized within the institute premises. Gliricidia sticks were planted along the boundary of the institute with the objective of establishing a green manuring crop, which can contribute to soil fertility improvement, nutrient recycling, and sustainable agricultural practices. Staff and participants took active participation in the planting programme. The programme served as an informative platform for participants to understand environmental issues, climate change challenges, and the importance of adopting eco-friendly and sustainable practices. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. S. Neenu, Senior Scientist (Soil Science), expressing gratitude to all dignitaries and all participants, for making the programme meaningful and successful.
