ICAR- Central Plantation Crops Research Institute conducted workshop on ‘Bio-suppression of rugose spiralling whitefly’

Kasaragod, January 6: ICAR-CPCRI conducted one day workshop on Bio-suppression of rugose spiralling whitefly on 6thJanuary 2018 at CPCRI campus. Invasive rugose spiralling whitefly was introduced to India in 2016 and is becoming a major problem in southern states including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Dr. N. K. Krishna Kumar, Regional Representative, South and Central Asia, Bioversity International inaugurated the workshop. He highlighted the importance of strict quarantine measures and biological control to manage invasive pests. Dr. P. K. Chakrabarty, Honorable ADG (Plant Protection) graced the function. Dr. P. Chowdappa, Director, ICAR- CPCRI presided over the function. Officials from ICAR institutes, State departments, Agricultural Universities, KVKs and CIPMCs were present in the function. They presented the current scenario of rugose spiralling whitefly and its management through biological interventions.

Technical bulletins and posters on ‘Rugose spiralling whitefly infesting coconut’ in six different languages including Hindi, English, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu were released during the function. Posters will be distributed to different states through concerned State Departments, CDB, CIPMCs and Coconut producer’s companies.

The technical session was chaired by Dr. P.K. Chakrabarty, ADG and Co-chaired by Dr. M. Mani, Emeritus Scientist, ICAR-NBAIR, Bengaluru. Six papers were presented during the session. Dr. Chandrika Mohan, Principal Scientist highlighted on the current status of rugose spiralling whitefly in the country. Dr. M. Mani, Emeritus Scientist emphasized on the biological suppression of Aleurodicus dispersus. Dr. Kalidas, Principal Scientist, ICAR-IIOPR, Pedavegi outlined the invasive potential of rugose spiralling whitefly on oil palm. Dr. A. Joseph Rajkumar, Principal Scientist highlighted on the bio-scavenging and bio-suppression of rugose spiralling whitefly. Dr. K. Selvaraj, Scientist, ICAR-NBAIR gave a comprehensive account of the pest and Dr. Jayaprakas, Head, Division of Crop Protection, ICAR-CTCRI overviewed the infestation range of rugose spiralling whitefly on cassava and other tuber crops.

A panel discussion was conducted to prepare action plan and road map for management of rugose spiralling whitefly and to discuss issues related to distribution of planting materials from infested area to healthy area. Dr. Vinayaka Hegde, Head, Crop Protection Division, ICAR-CPCRI delivered the welcome address and Dr. Chandrika Mohan, Principal Scientist, ICAR- CPCRI delivered vote of thanks
