Farmers FIRST (FFP) Training Scientific Management of Coconut Based Farming System for Sustainable Farm Income



Training programmes for the selected participant coconut farmers of Pathiyoor Panchayat on scientific technologies for coconut based farming system are being organized under ICAR-KVK funded Farmers’ FIRST programme by ICAR-CPCRI. The second batch of training on ‘Scientific Management of Coconut based farming system for sustainable farm income’ was organized during 16.11.2017 to 18.11.2017 at Pathiyoor Primary Health Centre Hall. Ninety Two selected coconut farmers from 5 wards (7, 9, 10, 11 and 12) including women farmers attended training.

The training programme had a detailed coverage on various aspects of coconut based farming system spanning farm planning to yield targeted production strategies. Organic farming and mixed farming was given due emphasis considering farmers interest and the scope to improve natural resource use efficiency in the village agro ecosystem.

Training was inaugurated by Mr. V. Prabhakaran, President, Pathiyoor. Sessions started with ‘introduction and present status of coconut farming’ by Dr. Anitha Kumari, P (Principal Scientist and PI, FFP, ICAR-CPCRI). ‘Disease free mother palm selection’ for seed nuts for the root (wilt) tract along with ‘Nursery management techniques’ were detailed by Dr. Shareefa, Scientist (plant breeding and Genetics).  Pest and Diseases of coconut based cropping system and their management strategies were handled in various sessions by Dr. Joseph Raj Kumar, Principal Scientist (Agrl. Entomology), Dr. Merin Babu, Scientist (Plant Pathology) and Dr. Anes, K.M., Scientist (Nematology).

Farmers were enlightened on nutrient management and strategies for efficient utilization of natural and bioresources in coconut based farming system in the sessions on ‘Organic farming of coconut’ and ‘IFS in coconut based cropping system’ by Dr. P. Subramanian, Principal Scientist (Agronomy). Session on ‘designing of feasible farm model by Dr. P. Anitha Kumari, helped farmers to propose interventions based on the knowledge they acquired from the training experts. Farm plans prepared by the individual farmers were collected for assessment and to support future farm interventions through this project.

The training was coordinated by Dr. Indhuja S, Scientist and a training manual provided to all participants along with certificates.
