Workshop on Coconut for Nurturing Ecology and Nourishing Society

As part of World Environment Day (WED) celebration, ICAR-CPCRI conducted a workshop on “Coconut for Nurturing Ecology and Nourishing Society” on June 05, 2017 at its Regional Station, Kayamkulam towards honing agricultural acumen among Higher Secondary School students. The Programme, fully supported by Kerala State Council for Science technology and Environment, Thiruvananthapuram, aimed at infusing ecological and health benefits of Coconut in tune with the theme of this year’s WED on “Connecting People to Nature”.

Dr. Chandrika Mohan, Principal Scientist welcomed the students for the technical sessions. In his discourse on “Ecology Edging out Economics”, Dr. A. Joseph Rajkumar, Principal Scientist narrated the history of WED, composting of food stuffs, Urban Heat Island and Ecological Debt Day. Dr. V. Krishnakumar, Head delivered a lucid presentation on “Coconut and Ecosystem Service” highlighting socio-cultural services, crop pluralism, diversity of microbiome, nutrient recycling and carbon sequestration. Dr. P. Anithakumari, Principal Scientist stressed on the health benefits of coconut and its value added products to supplement on the nutritional demand of mankind. Diversity in coconut and the wide array of genotypes with multifaceted utilities were highlighted by Dr. Regi. J. Thomas, Principal Scientist. Dominance of insects, ecosystem services of insects, pestilence and biological suppression including the applicability of nematodes were outlined by Dr. Chandrika Mohan, Principal Scientist in her lecture on “Invertebrates intertwined with Coconut”.

Eleven schools participated in the quiz competition entitled “Coconut to Nature and Mankind”. Govt. Boys Higher Secondary School, Kayamkulam and MSM School, Kayamkulam emerged victorious. Students were taken around the experimental fields by Dr A. Abdul Haris, Principal Scientist and field techniques in crop production system management was practically showcased.

In his presidential address during the valedictory function, Dr. V. Krishnakumar, Head called upon the students to be a part of environment protection campaign and curtail the use of plastic in day to day life.  Smt B. Vijayamma, President Krishnapuram Grama panchayat inaugurated the programme by lighting lamp and urged the students to connect to nature by critical observation and logistic approach to understanding. Reduce pollution and promote organic farming, she remarked. She gave away the prizes to all winners. Sri. K.K. Anilkumar, Member, Ward councilor, Kayamkulam Municipality offered felicitation. Dr. JG Ray, Head, School of Biosciences, M.G. University  made a scintillating talk on “Ecology and Environment” and advised the participants to learn from Nature as nature hardly makes any mistakes. He emphasized on Environment Management to make it sustainable for the futuristic survival of mankind. A booklet and E-copy on “Connecting Coconut to Citizens” were released on the occasion. Dr. Regi. J. Thomas welcomed the gathering and Dr. A. Joseph Rajkumar proposed vote of thanks. Later, the guests planted tree saplings in the field to mark the eve of WED.
