Training programme on “Techniques for Soil Health Assessment” conducted at Kayamkulam

A five day training programme on ‘Techniques for Soil Health Assessment” fully sponsored by State Department of Agriculture Development and Farmer’s Welfare was organised at CPCRI, Regional Station, Kayamkulam from 27/6/2016 to 1/7/2016.   The programme was implemented as hands on orientation training as part of the central sector scheme on “Soil Health Card” under “National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture”. Twenty participants from Kottayam, Alappuzha and Idukki districts of Kerala comprising Agricultural Officers of Krishibhavan, District Soil Testing Laboratories and Scientific Assistants attended the training. The classes were handled by scientists from the Regional Station as well as from ICAR-CTCRI, Thiruvananthapuram and ORARS, Kayamkulam.  The course content included theory sessions on basic analytical principles, instrumentation tools, and cutting edge techniques in physico-chemical analysis of soil as well as hands on practical sessions on various soil health parameters.

The valedictory session was chaired by Dr. V. Krishnakumar, Head, CPCRI, Regional Station, Kayamkulam on 01/07/2016 and in his opening remarks emphasized on the accuracy and precision of results by perfect handling of equipment accomplished through good laboratory practices. A brief report about the training including the course curriculum was presented by the course director at the session.  In the feedback session, trainees were overwhelmed by the knowledge gained in various analytical procedures in nutrient estimation in soil, exposure on handling equipment especially Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and the underlying principles in all soil analysis. Dr. Jeena Mathew, Scientist (Soil Science) served as the Course Director of the programme.
