World Environment Day-2016 commemorated at Kayamkulam

World Environment Day (WED-2016) was commemorated at ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station, Kayamkulam in a befitting manner on 07-06-2016. Nearly 50 school students from RVLP School, Mukkada and Govt. UPS, Krishnapuram participated in the programme.

Sri. K.V. Dayal, a noted environmentalist from Muhamma, Alappuzha was the Chief Guest and inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp. In his inspiring inaugural address, he called upon the students to emerge out with “out of box” thinking and bring forth novel idea for harnessing science at the highest order. He opined that “Ecology is more important than Economics” and urged the students to understand basics in sustainable and organic farming to evolve evergreen revolution. Dr. V. Krishnakumar, Head, in his presidential address emphasized the role of students in biodiversity conservation and proper nurturing of trees to mitigate climate change. Sri. Anilkumar, Member, Kayamkulam Municipality and Sri Viji, Member, Krishnapuram Grama Panchayat offered felicitations and expressed wholehearted delight to participate in the programme. 

Sri K. Narendran, Nambaruvikala, Karunagapally, Kollam was the Guest of Honour and ICAR-CPCRI resolved to compliment him for his outstanding contributions in the conservation of 600 indigenous medicinal plants, mass propagation and distribution of rare and threatened medicinal and aromatic plant species for the welfare of farming community during the past four decades. He has been selected for the prestigious National Plant Genome Saviour Farmer Recognition-2013 award from PPV&FR, New Delhi. A citation, shawl and a certificate was presented to him during the programme. Sri. KV Dayal was also felicitated by ICAR-CPCRI for his unstinted efforts in eco-friendly farming by offering a shawl and a certificate.       

On the occasion, tree saplings were distributed to all staff, students and dignitaries. A few students shared their experiences about the programme with a sense of gratitude and happiness receiving the tree saplings. Later planting of tree saplings was done around the Institute by the dignitaries, students and those staff who are due for superannuation during the current year.  The message of “eco-restoration through mass tree-planting campaign” was thus justified on the eve of WED-2016.

Dr. Chandrika Mohan, Principal Scientist welcomed the gathering and Dr. S. Kalavathi, Principal Scientist proposed the vote of thanks. Dr. Abdul Haris, Principal Scientist coordinated the programme and Dr. Jeena Mathew, Scientist functioned as Organizing Secretary.
