In order to fulfill our commitment to supply quality coconut seedlings to the farming community, during this planting season, ICAR-CPCRI distributed QR (QR response) code tagged coconut seedlings from its Regional Station, Kayamkulam. The registration for coconut seedlings was completed during the second week of March 2016 (9th to 12th March 2016). There was overwhelming response from the farmers across the state, especially from the southern districts, and a total of 1,420 farmers registered for coconut seedlings. The seedling distribution was scheduled during 1st to 4th June 2016. One thousand two hundred farmers collected the seedlings from the Regional Station, Kayamkulam.

Altogether 9,000 coconut seedlings were distributed, which include Kalaparee (4,500), Kalparaksha (200), West Coast Tall (2,150), Chowghat Orange Dwarf (1,100) and hybrid (1,050) seedlings. The Kalpasree and Kalaparaksha varieties were released from the Regional Station for cultivating in root (wilt) disease affected tracts for their disease tolerance/resistance.

Scanning the QR code, affixed on the labels tagged on individual coconut seedling, will enable the farmer to reach CPCRI’s website which will provide specific information about the characteristics of each variety being distributed from CPCRI. This QR coding is aimed to help the farmers to get only quality assured seedlings for planting in their field. This is more important at time when spurious seedlings are being sold by vendors who claim that they are distributors/dealers of CPCRI’s authentic coconut seedlings. The link to ICAR-CPCRI’s website obtained on scanning the QR code is http://www.cpcri.gov.in/index.php/2014-03-04-05-33-14/qr-code-labelled-coconut-seedlings.

ICAR-CPCRI Regional Station has already obtained “3 Star” rating from National Horticultural Board (NHB), New Delhi, which is authorized by Govt. of India to provide accreditation to nurseries based on the quality and pedigree of mother palms, standards adopted during seedling material selection and infra structure available in each nursery.
