KSPB funded Coconut project launched at Chettikulangara and Mayyanad

Kerala State Planning Board funded project on “Enhancing the economic viability of coconut based land use system for land use planning in Kerala state” was launched on Chettikulangara and Mayyanad panchayaths. The multi institutional project lead by Central Plantation Crops Research Institute is conducted at six locations representing different Agro Ecological Units in the state.  The implementation of the project at Chettikulangara panchayath representing the Onattukara Sandy soils (AEU-3) and Southern Coastal Plains (AEU-1) is taken up by CPCRI regional Station, Kayamkulam and KVK-Alappuzha, where CPCRI, RS looks after the research experiments, and KVK –Alappuzha takes care of the demonstration plots in farmers’s fields.  The project aims at increasing the returns from coconut based land use system through increasing productivity of coconut palms by improving the soil health through organic residue recycling and soil test based nutrient management.

The official launching of the programme at Chettikulangara was done on 6th August, 2015 by Smt. S. Chandralekha, President, Chettikulanara Grama Panchayath in a meeting attended by about 150 coconut farmers of the panchayath. Dr. V. Krishnakumar, Head, CPCRI (RS), Kayamkulam, Dr. C. Thamban, Principal Scientist, CPCRI, Kasaragod, Mr. Chenkalil Rajan, Smt. Leena Rani, Panchayath members, Smt. Hemalatha, Agricultural Officer, Mr. N. Sreedharakurup, President, Coconut Producers Federation spoke on the occation. The launching programme was followed by a seminar-cum-interface on ‘Scientific coconut management with emphasis on nutrient management’ lead by Dr. K. M. Nair, Principal Scientist, National Bureau of Soil Science and Land use planning, Bangalore and participated by Dr. C. Thamban, PS, CPCRI, Kasaragod, Dr. P. Muralidharan, Senior scientist and Head, KVK-Alappuzha & Dr K. Sajnanath, SMS, KVK-Alappuzha.

The project at Mayyanad panchayath was launched on 7th August at Saradavilasini Library, Venpalakkara. Sri. S. Jayamohan, District Panchayath President, Kollam inaugurated the programme. Dr. V. Krishnakumar, Head, CPCRI (RS), Kayamkulam, Dr C. Thamban, Principal Scientist, CPCRI, Kasaragod, Smt R Sheela kumari, President Mayyand Panchayath, Smt. J Shanida, District panchayath member, Sri Venu, Assistant director of agriculture, Smt Sreevathsa, Agricultural Officer and Sri Anandababu, President, Coconut producers society spoke on the occasion. The seminar on ‘Scientific coconut management with special emphasis to nutrient management’ was lead by Dr. K. M. Nair, PS, NBSS&LUP, Bangalore and attended by Dr. P. Muralidharan, Senior scientist and Head, KVK-Alappuzha and Sri. Rajeev M S, SMS, KVK-Alappuzha. About 120 coconut farmers of the panchayath attended the programme.
