ICAR-CPCRI convened ASPIRE programme

A one-day farming-studded crash course under the ICAR’s Agriculture Science Pursuit for Inspired Research Excellence (ASPIRE-2015) was held at ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station, Kayamkulam on 16-05-2015. Sixty-eight plus2 students from various schools around Kayamkulam participated in the programme. In tune with the ICAR’s twin major initiatives “Farmer First” and “Student Ready” to accelerate agricultural research and development, ASPIRE-2015 programme was designed to infuse farming instincts among the budding talents at school level. The course inspired young students to take up agricultural research, academics and extension as a profession in their career for the future inclusive development of the country.

The programme focused on inculcating scientific temper on farm science, understanding science in agriculture, infusing better communication skills, agriculture as career option, institutes of agricultural research, impediments of climate change, doyens in agricultural research, fascinating insects, beneficial and pathogenic microbes, chemistry of living processes, in vitro mass propagation techniques, leisure-time gardening and the skin of planet earth, the precious soil. In addition to the systematic lectures on agricultural science, students were exposed to various experimental fields and laboratories in the schools of Genetics, Soil Science, Entomology and Pathology.

In his address during the valedictory function, Dr. K. Muralidharan, Acting Head, Division of Social Sciences, ICAR-CPCRI, Kasaragod complimented the scientists in organizing this unique programme at the Regional Station and urged students to take up agriculture as a passion in their career. Dr. V. Krishnakumar, Head presided over the function and appealed the students to work hard to achieve the skyrocketing agricultural demand of the country. Later Dr. K. Muralidharan, Acting Head, Division of Social Sciences and Dr. V. Krishnakumar, Head of the Regional Station released the Training manual on “Gleanings in Agriculture” and “E-manual” (compact diskette) containing the lecture notes and power point presentations.

In the agricultural quiz conducted as a part of the programme, Kumari Azna Siddiqu, Govt. HSS, Oachira and Kumari Anushree, Janasakthi Public School, Velanchira emerged victorious and were awarded memento and certificates. All the participants were provided with a certificate of participation and a copy of the training manual. In the feedback session, students expressed their eagerness and enthusiasm to pursue agriculture as a science and profession in their career and requested the organizers to conduct this programme for at least three-days.  

Dr. A. Joseph Rajkumar, Principal Scientist (Ag. Entomology) and Dr. Merin Babu, Scientist (Plant Pathology) of the Regional Station functioned as course director and associate of the programme. Interested candidates can have a soft copy of the e-manual on demand.
