KRISHI MELA AT ICAR - CPCRI REGIONAL STATION VITTAL

 

ICAR-Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) Kasaragod has organized Krishi Mela at its Regional Station, Vittal on 10th January, 2015 to create awareness on the technological advances in arecanut and cocoa to enhance the profitability. Shri D. V. Sadananda Gowda, Hon’ble Union Minister for Law and Justice has inaugurated the Krishi Mela and delivered inaugural address. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of scientist – extension – farmer interface in solving field problems for enhancing the profitability of farmers. He also urged the scientists of CPCRI to develop arecanut climbing device and other implements to combat the labour problems and strategies containing the loses due to fruit rot.
Smt. Shakunthala Shetty, MLA, Puttur presided over the inaugural session and delivered presidential address. In her speech, she emphasized the need for taking up demonstration plots in farmers’ fields to showcase the modern technologies.

Shri. Konkodi Padmanabha, President, CAMPCO, Mangalore, Shri. K. Narasimha Nayak, Vice President, MAMCOS, Shimoga, Shri. Manchi Srinivasa Achar President, All India Arecanut Growers Association, Puttur and Shri. Shree Padre, Farm Journalist, Adike Patrike, Puttur appreciated the efforts of CPCRI to deliver the technologies to the farmers through regular contact programmes and krishi mela. Dr. P. Chowdappa, Director, CPCRI, Kasaragod welcomed the Guests and farmers. Dr. K. S. Ananda, Head, CPCRI Regional Station, Vittal proposed vote of thanks.

Interactive seminars on arecanut based cropping system and cocoa production technologies were organized during Krishi Mela. The Krishi Mela included demonstrations of varieties and hybrids of arecanut and cocoa, arecanut based cropping and farming systems, spraying devices for fruit rot management, strategies for YLD management, value added products, machineries' for climbing,  harvesting and post harvest processing and technologies for management of wild animals. About 3000 farmers from different arecanut growing regions of Karnataka and Kerala were participated in the Krishi Mela.  Input producing and marketing industries were participated in the exhibition. To encourage the farmers women and attract youth into agriculture, quiz programme and farmers participatory exhibition were conducted. The event was well covered in all local and national print and electronic media.
