National Training programme on Cocoa production and processing technologies was organized during 20-22 November, 2014 at CPCRI Regional Station, Vittal under the guidance of Dr. P. Chowdappa, Director, CPCRI, Kasaragod.  This training was sponsored by Directorate of Cashew and Cocoa Development (DCCD), Cochin. Twenty four trainees (developmental Officers) from Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu had participated in the training.

Dr. S. Elain Apshara, Senior Scientist welcomed the Guests and trainees.Dr. K. S. Ananda, Head, CPCRI, RS, Vittal gave an overview about cocoa research and development in India. The Chief Guest of the function, Dr. Venkatesh N. Huballi, Director, DCCD, Cochin, inaugurated the training (Photo enclosed - 1). In his inaugural speech he stated that ‘cocoa production should be increased to meet the increasing demands. He also told that developmental officers should be trained on production, protection and processing technologies so as to help the farming community.  Dr. D. Jaganathan, Scientist proposed vote of thanks during the inaugural session.

Scientists from CPCRI, RS, Vittal and Kasaragod had handled the topics viz., crop improvement in cocoa, nursery techniques in cocoa, crop production in cocoa, nutrient deficiencies in cocoa, pest and disease management in cocoa, safe use of pesticides, cost of production of cocoa, production, consumption and marketing of cocoa, extension strategies for cocoa development. Deputy Director, DCCD, Kochi had covered the topic on Developmental programmes for cocoa under MIDH in India.

Trainees were trained on practical’s viz., soft wood grafting in cocoa ( Photos enclosed – 2, 3) , cocoa pruning and Bordeaux mixture preparation. Exposure visits were arranged to CAMPCO and Cadbury processing units at Puttur, CAMPCO chocolate factory, Puttur and Farmers’ gardens at Puttur.

The participants were given with training materials like Bag, Technical bulletins, Books, Calendar for cocoa, Note pad, pen, folder etc. Certificate of participation, group photo were also given to trainees. All the participants expressed their satisfaction about the training and had a very good interaction and discussions.
