Interactive conclave with Krishnapauram Gramapanchayat leaders held at Kayamkulam


A one-day interactive conclave with Krishnapuram Gramapanchayat leaders, officials of State Department of Agriculture Development & Farmer’s Welfare and scientists of ICAR-CPCRI was held at held at the Regional Station on 11-08-2016 to downstream the technology translation process at panchayat level through community level farmer-participatory approach as part of centenary celebrations. Smt. B. Vijayamma, President, Krishnapuram Gramapanchayat, Sri. KK. Anil kumar, Councilor, Kayamkulam Municipality, Ward members of Krishnapuram Gramapanchayat, Sri Anilkumar, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Smt Mini M. Pillai, Agricultural Officer, Krishnapuram Gramapanchayat participated in the programme.

Smt.B. Vijayamma, President, Krishnapuram Gramapanchayat in her presidential address called for a close tie-up with ICAR-CPCRI in all farming programmes of the panchayat thereby accessing best service from scientific fraternity. She suggested developing coconut-based demonstration trials with the active support of scientists of the Regional Station so that other farmers could emulate the technology with ease. In his keynote address Dr. V. Krishnakumar, Head highlighted the salient research accomplishments of the station in tackling root (wilt) disease and the various outreach programmes organized through farmer-participatory approaches in different villages including Krishnapuram.

Smt. Mini M. Pillai, Agricultural Officer outlined some of the farm problems encountered in the panchayat such as infestation by red palm weevil in coconut, depleting soil health status, non-availability of skilled technicians in pest diagnosis, poor knowledge in health management in palms etc. She also opined that ICAR-CPCRI could empower the Krishnapuram farmers in palm-based cropping/farming system approach as well as value addition in coconut.

Sri. K.K. Anilkumar, Councilor, Kayamkulam municipality and Ward leaders of Krishnapuram grama panchayat spoke on the occasion highlighting the availability of karmasena members for farm operations in the panchayat, need for skill upgradiation of technicians as well as farmers and technological empowerment for decentralized programme on coconut seedling production. Members also felt to have similar interactive session once in three months for effective orientation of technologies.

In his concluding remarks Dr. V. Krishnakumar, Head assured to deliver all technical support to farmers through capacity building programmes, laying out of demonstration trials, decentralized production of coconut seedlings and regular conduct of interface programme. Dr. S. Kalavathi, Pr. Scientist welcomed the gathering and Dr. P. Anithakumari, Pr. Scientist proposed vote of thanks.

In the afternoon, all members visited the experimental plots of ICAR-CPCRI and acquainted with the latest production system in dwarf and hybrid coconut palms including crop-habitat diversification strategies. They were all impressed with the uniform stand of coconut palms in the farm and the technologies developed by ICAR-CPCRI for the betterment of farming community.
