Scientist - Farmer Interface Programme on Coconut and Arecanut farming

ICAR-Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Kasaragod organised Scientist-Farmer Interface Programme on Coconut and Arecanut at Velliangiri near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu on 07.05.2015.  The interface Programme was organised in collaboration with Uzhavan Farmer Producer Company and Isha Foundation.  Dr. P.Chowdappa, Director, ICAR-CPCRI inaugarated the interface Programme. Mr. Viswanathan L, Chairman, Farmer Producer Company, Mr. Velumayil Swamy K A, Director, Farmer Producer Company, Bhanumathi Mohanraj, Director, Farmer Produer Company and  Mr Ravikularaman R, Chief Executive Officer, Isha Foundation offered felicitations in the inaugural function.  Dr. D. Jaganathan, Scientist welcomed the gathering and Mr. T.Kumar, Director of the Farmer Producer Company proposed vote of thanks.Dr. Ravi Bhat (HD, Crop production), Dr. P Subramanian (Pr. Scientist), Dr.C Thamban (Pr. Scientist), Dr. A C Mathew (Pr. Scientist), Dr. Joseph Rajkumar (Sr. Scientist) and Dr. D Jaganathan (Scientist) interacted with farmers on various aspects of Crop Improvement, Crop Production, Crop Protection and Product diversification in coconut and arecanut.  About 200 farmers from various parts of Coimbatore district participated in the interface programme. After the interface programme a diagnostic field visit was conducted to nearby farmers’ plots.  The team of scientists visited coconut gardens of Mr.Rangaswamy, Velankadu thottam, Poondi main road, Semmedu, Perur(Tk), Coimbatore, Mr. Gunasekaran Dhandapani, Semmedu, Perur (Tk), Coimbatore and Mr.Kasturirangan, Kasturi organic farm, Semmedu, Kootupuliyamaram road, Perur (Tk), Coimbatore. Nutritional disorders, incidence of diseases like stem bleeding, basal stem rot and problems related to irrigation/water management were observed in the farmers’ gardens.  Technological interventions were suggested to solve the field problems and follow-up programmes were planned to monitor the interventions and impact.
