Swachhta Pakhwada activities held at ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station, Kayamkulam


ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station, Kayamkulam organized various events as envisaged in the Swachhta Pakhwada during December 16-31, 2019 by grouping the staff into fourteen units. The Swachhta pledge was undertaken by all staff under the leadership of Dr. S. Kalavathi, Acting Head with display of awareness banners at the strategic points of the Institute on 16-12-2019.


Conducted an intensive cleaning drive in the Administrative/Library Sections to weed out the obsolete, files and records under the programme titled “Stock taking on digitization of office records/e-office implementation”. A detailed discussion was also held to implement the e-office in our Regional Station. A cleanliness and sanitation drive was organised in the surrounding area of canteenwithin the campus on 19.12.2019. Weeding was done and all plastic wastes including plastic bottles, polythene covers, disposable plates, glasses etc were collectedanddisposed properly. Demonstrated the procedure for kitchen composting using EM solution and it was decided to convert food wastes of canteen to compost which can be further utilized as organic manure for the kitchen garden of canteen.  Residential colony inhabitants also sensitized on the composting of homestead/farm wastes using EM solution. Campaign on cleaning of sewage and water lines in residential quarters of the campus was undertaken. Awareness were created among the students and general public about various activities under the swachh Bhartat Mission and they were sensitized on importance of cleanliness and personal hygiene during the Karshika Mela at Thodupuzha.

National Kisan Divas was celebrated under the theme ‘Synergising coconut Technologies to Counter Climate Change and Doubling income’ on December 23, 2019, commemorating the birth anniversary of Shri Choudhary Charan Singh, former Prime Minster of India. About 100 farmers from Kollam and Alappuzha districts were participated the event. The programme comprised technical sessions, field visits and farmer’s quiz contest. A coconut based agricultural quiz was organized with active participation of farmers. During the event an exhibition to promote clean and green technologies and organic farming practice was also organized.

Organized a mobile campaign in Krishnapuram panchayat and Kayamkulam Municipality to deliver the message of the Swachh Bharat activity to the to the general public and students by displaying posters on the campaign vehicle and through speeches and songs on cleanliness and green protocol. The local body representatives were actively participated in this programme. The messenger vehicle reached the NSS training camps of Govt. UPS, Krishnapuram and Grama Panchayath Office, Krishnapuram, town areas of Kayamkulam Municipality, Krishnapuram Gramapanchayat etc. and delivered the message of Swachh Bharat activity to the local residents.  The use of bio degradable materials, vermi compost technologies and importance of keeping the surroundings neat and clean was highlighted in this programme. A sanitation campaign was launched on 30-12-2019 at LP School, Krishnapuram sensitizing the students as well as general public in the noble mission of cleanliness. The staff members visited the community waste disposal sites and compost pits and created awareness on usage of Metarhizium  for the management of rhinoceros beetle infesting coconut. Organised a competition for the selection of best residential quarters and awards were distributed to the winners during the valedictory session.

The valedictory function of the Swachh Bharat Pakhwada was held at the Regional Station, Kayamkulam on 31-12-2019. Dr. S. Kalavathi, Acting Head presided over the function and highlighted on the importance of personal hygiene and emphasized the need for attitude change inorder to maintain the public places garbage free. Dr. Jeena Mathew, Scientist welcomed the gathering, Dr. Anes K.M., Scientist presented the programme report and Dr. K. Nihad proposed vote of thanks. Dr. K. Nihad and Dr. Anes K.M. acted as over all coordinators of the programme
