A workshop on ‘Development communication- Changing platforms and new paradigms’ was conducted at Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (ICAR-CPCRI), Kasaragod on 31st October 2019. Dr. Anitha Karun, Director  CPCRI, inaugurated the workshop. Mr. T.A. Shafi, President, Kasaragod Press Club presided over the inaugural function.

Mr. G. Sajan, Deputy Director, Doordarshan, New Delhi delivered the key note address and made presentation on the theme of the workshop. Mr. Sajan opined that in the fast paced space of media landscape in the country it is important to redefine the role of the journalist. Character of media has changed substantially in the last 70 years. Media ownership has become capital intensive and the priority has shifted from the subtle art of education and information to the game of profit creation. The victim in the process is the development process in the country. The concept of development also has undergone major changes. From the times when development was synonymous with growth we have come to concepts like de-growth and post development theories. From the days of technological determinism we have come to approach new technologies with suspicion. This has become all the more relevant in the background of the fierce impact of climate change. Media has the mandate to create a Social Consensus where what is good for society in the future is selected with judicious care. Local media has a major role to play in this background. They need to create a communication paradigm which puts the ordinary person in the centre of the discourse, Mr. Sajan added.

Members of Kasaragod Press club, students and scholars of Dept. of Social Work, Central University of Kerala attended the workshop along with CPCRI personnel. Dr. Dilip Diwakar, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Social Work, Central University of Kerala offered felicitations. Dr. Thamban C, Principal Scientist & Co-ordinator, welcomed the gathering and Dr K. Muralidharan, Head, Division of Social Sciences proposed vote of thanks.
